Upper-Austrian Official Wants Austrian Courts to Block Temelin

Source: Czech A.M.
Date: June 13, 2001

June 13 -Upper-Austrian Environment Minister Ursula Haubner wants its country's lawmakers to file a suit against the Czech energy utility CEZ blocking the launch of the Temelin nuclear power plant. Austrian lawyers say that such a suit could be brought against the plant, as a possible accident at Temelin would also cause damages on Austrian territory. According to several bilateral environmental protection agreements, the Czech Republic, after it joins the EU, would be required by law to respect the ruling of a court whose territory is endangered by a nuclear power plant. CEZ contends however that it is impossible to sue someone for losses that could arise hypothetically only. (LN 1)
