MAURITIUS CABINET MEETING HELD
ON FRIDAY 17 JANUARY 1997

The cabinet met this morning under the chairmanship of the Prime
Minister, Dr. the Hon. Navin Ramgoolam and has, in the course of
its deliberations:
 . . . .

5. taken note that a British Vessel carrying nuclear waste from
France to Japan would be going round South Africa and South to
Mauritius. Mauritius has expressed its stand in line with the
protest of several countries concerned by the route to be adopted
by the vessel. Although we have been given the guarantee that
all necessary precautions had been taken, Mauritius has made it a
point that in all circumstances the vessel should travel outside
our exclusive economic zone.
